Våffeldagen–Waffle Day!

· · · · · · ·

Waffles are beloved on any day of the year, but on March 25th they take center stage for Våffeldagen–Waffle Day!

Våffeldagen (Sweden), Vaffeldagen (Norway), Vaffeldag (Denmark) are just a few of the names to celebrate Waffle Day on March 25th in Scandinavia. In Sweden, this tradition appears to have started around the Christian feast day, Vårfrudagen (Our Lady Day or Annunciation Day). Vårfrudagen sounds a bit like Våffeldagen in faster speech. Swedes decided to celebrate Vårfrudagen by making waffles and hailing the arrival of Spring. Våffeldagen was a significant day for agrarian Swedes of the past who were living off the land. It marked the start of the growing season and more plentiful and joyful times. Two main types of waffles emerged in this culture: äggvåfflor (egg waffles) and frasvåfflor (crispy waffles). Both versions honor the greater availability of eggs, milk, and cream. Now you can find endless versions of both styles!

Below are a few of my favorites!

Swedish Buttermilk Waffles for Våffeldagen–Waffle Day:

These tender and flavorful Swedish Buttermilk Waffles are a treasured family recipe and are traditionally topped with freshly whipped cream and lingonberries.

Crispy Swedish Waffles:

Crispy Swedish Waffles, or Frasvåfflor, are light in texture and delicious served with jam and a bit of fresh cream.

Spiced Buttermilk Oat Waffles:

Spiced Buttermilk Oat Waffles are gluten-free with a nice texture from the oats and a touch of cardamom, cinnamon and brown sugar.

Savory Chive Waffles with Smoked Salmon and Skyr:

Savory Chive Waffles are crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside, gluten-free and make a perfect light meal topped with smoked salmon and skyr.
